In February, 2022, some CZ members were sharing memories about this reunion and Sobo asked Dave about the priest who attended. Here is Dave's reply: That was Father John T. Hiltz, a great friend to me and my family and to Willo. J.T., as we called him, taught at our high school, then was at Notre Dame for a couple years getting his Ph.D. In Theology. He used to say Mass for a group of us in the log chapel at N.D. Had a great two room suite in Brownson Hall, behind the Dome. It was right above the arch. He also parked his car right by Brownson, knowing that if he got a ticket from Campus police, Willo would pull it! What a scream. He found humor in many things and was legendary for his laughter, among many other gifts. I have a lot of memories with J.T., but I'll share just one. He was beloved where ever he served. After ND he was Director of Religious Education for the Diocese of Toledo. His residence at that time was on the campus of a seminary in Toledo where he also taught of couple classes. I visited him there once. At dinner time we decided to check out the dining hall to see what was being served. There were probably 200 seminarians and staff in the hall at the time. As they all saw Fr. John walking through, they rose as one and spontaneously gave him a standing ovation. At first, I didn't know what was going on, then I figured it out and was amazed. It continued until we exited the hall. He had said nothing, just entered and walked through and they all cheered him raucously. Just for being J.T. He passed away a few years ago, then having retired to L.A. to be near his brother Ed, who was also very funny. During my last visit with him in Yorba Linda, we attended the ND-SC game in 2006. He was starting to fail at that time, but wanted to go to the game! J.T. Is buried in the Catholic Clergy cemetery in Orange County. I think I'll ask him to put in a good word for the Bengals [ed. note - it almost worked]. I'm sure he will since he is also a graduate of Xavier University here in Cincinnati. D.D.
