Dance with Hans CyberZahm Reunion .. Fox's random notes: Fishing ... the part I liked best was when John, Dave and I "went upstream" ... the wading in the stream was cool, as was casting the spoon in the stream. It did tick us off a bit as the young man we talked to when we first arrived went wading off around the bend and returned a few minutes later with a big fish, while we were still being shut out after about 6 hours of fishing. I even molded the play dough bait to look like a little minnow, but still couldn't catch anything. While I was up on the bridge waiting for John and Dave to finish (I always seemed to be the first to tire of the fishing) about 5 different pickup truck drivers stopped to ask me fish questions. I gave very decisive answers but had no idea what I was talking about. I just spouted off different lines from Gabes' twenty pre-trip emails about the fishing plans. They all agreed with my wisdom. Must be the waders. Returning to the others at the mouth of that really good lake, we learn that Gabes caught a fish!!!!!!! I wanted to eat it that night, but kept quiet since Ann Marie had made enough food already in the two days we were at Gabes' to feed a small army. My waders were borrowed from one of DD's sons, I think. It was apparent that whoever they belonged to had a smaller butt than me, but bigger feet. That made for an interesting fit. The best feeling of the weekend was taking those waders off ... make that second best. The field goal was cool too. The odds of Gary winning those three 9 player Scat games: 729 to 1 assuming everyone had an equal chance ... as Albert pointed out its not really that high, since someone had to win the first game, but it makes a better tale this way. Andy and I kept making the same one line jokes at the same time. It got to the point where I would think of some stupid comment/ observation to make and I would just sit on it for a second and boom, it would pop out of Andy. Food, food, food. That was a lot of food. Usually at these reunions I remember the beer, beer, beer, but this year it was the food. I had practiced a lot of golf and had high hopes going into the tournement but I was completely intimidated by the driving range at Hans' club. Strong wind, right in the face. Blew me away, so to speak. The course turned out to be very reasonable, although the wind did come into play on the 600 yard par 5 ... straight into the wind. Paired with Albert, Willo, and Sobo. A good group. Sobo was awesome for the first two-thirds of the day. Shooting 106, about 5 over what my handicap indicates ... wind? I think it was nerves. Next time I'll try hard not to try hard. What a game! On the 12th hole I sliced my second shot into a small field. Albert said we had to keep it moving and he only let me look for the ball for 47 seconds. Leaving the next tee Albert discovered he had misplaced his cigar. We spent 25 minutes looking around for it. Scouring the tee box, returning to the previous green, tearing the cart apart. Couldn't find the sucker. Found out at the next hole that Willo had it. It was also fun observing the usually intense Albert manage to play a shot as John stood about 3 feet directly in front of him, watching intently. Skybox was great for hangin all together. Fantastic. The Bloody Marys were very good on the way to the game. Had a nostalgic walk around campus with John and Willo. Past the library, we're number one Moses, the north dining hall. Broke into Zahm. Talked to a young man who lived in Willo's freshman year room. Looked around the room. It was small! Stopped by the Grotto and church. Got lost in the The Huddle. Wonderful seats for the game. Right behind the ND bench. Great fun watching all the sideline action in addition to the great view of the game. Thanks again Dave. What was the Purdue coach thinking? I'm no football pundit but even I was asking why they weren't throwing the ball. Article I read in the paper the next day hypothesized that the coach was trying to prove they had a running game because he had read a detractor say that Purdue only had a passing game. I missed seeing the guy step in the horseshit because I had better things to do .... I was watching the nerf football get run over twice by the big truck. I think the guy who stepped into the shit was doing the same. Dump Davie, Ban Tiger, and lots of roto baseball talk. Scat games, baseball bets, casino trip ... gambling was everywhere! Only time I won was when Gabes said let's cut for a Lincoln and my ace beat his king. Andy knows the words to a lot of songs. "Baby its the best thing for you ... " Broke 1,000,000 on Hans' pinball game. Delta lounge for one last beer. Talking with John in our room ... senior year all over again. Fantastic. Thanks, I needed that. Fox
